JO'S POTTING SHED
CV
I initially trained as a dress designer, but I never took it up as a full time career. After over
20 years in the Civil Service, I fulfilled a long-term ambition by combining my love of plants
and gardens, together with my ability as a painter, and started my own business from home.
The emphasis is on a back garden nursery because the area in which approximately 2,000 plants
are raised annually is very small! I also design gardens and follow up the design with
maintenance as and when needed. I have gardened all my life so have gained my knowledge and
skills informally, but this has been enhanced by the completion of the RHS diploma course in
horticulture, as well as other garden and design courses.
I took up flower painting in 1995 using watercolours and and am mostly self-taught. I have undertaken
two large projects in the last five years for local country parks - Itchen Valley,
www.eastleigh.gov.uk/countryside/itchen-valley-country-park and the Royal
Victoria Country Park www.hants.gov.uk/countryside/rvcp . This involved recording and painting the flora (and occasionally the fauna) in the parks
throughout the seasons, all to be used for educational purposes. Although very time-consuming, it was a
privilege to undertake this work and it is satisfying to know that the next generation are learning
about a fast disappearing countryside.
I recently had a yearning to return to textiles so went to college and took a Btec in felt making and
embroidery. It was an experience being taught with younger people, learning as much from them as from
the tutor. (Lots of experimenting and creativity and I was thrilled to pass with distinction.)
